Recurring Boils

Recurrent Boils

A boil, which is a tender lump in the skin, that over time develops a yellowish white head (the pustule) can occur at anytime in anyone.  Sometimes a number of boils will come and go over a relatively short space of time (ie you will develop one boil after another).  If this occurs then you are said to be suffering from recurrent boils.

The most common cause of boils is infection by the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus, this is a bacteria that is carried naturally by around a third of the population.  Obviously if you or a close family member are a carrier of the Staph bacteria then you are bound to be more susceptible to recurrent boils.

Your general lifestyle can also contribute to recurrent boils appearing, for example, if you are tired, feeling run down or eat a particularly unhealthy and unbalanced diet.

You will also be more prone to recurrent boils if you have a weakened immune system.  This could be caused by a disease such as diabetes or HIV or could be a result of a long term illness such as cancer.

All in all recurrent boils are very common and will affect many people at sometime during their lives.

If you think you are suffering with recurrent boils, you should seek the advice of a medical professional.  Blood tests my be required to ensure your immune system is functioning correctly and swabs may be taken to determine if you are a natural carrier of the Staph bacteria.

You may be prescribed an anti biotic drug to kill the bacteria responsible for the boils, if this fails to prevent recurrences then the boils may need to be drained and removed.
